Pulp Fiction is a classic and people rave about it almost every day, but for me this is my first time watching the film actually. I will say, it is a little confusing at times, but it was definitely one of my favorite films that I have watched. It had a very good story line, with all of the co stories in the side also. With all of the different stories that you have to follow within it, I would say this is one of my top five movies that I have seen. Quinton Tarantino did an excellent job with directing this movie.

            One of my favorite aspects of this film is the different stories within the movie. It took me a little to get an idea of what was going on, but once I got it, it all made sense and it was genius to have the different stories interwoven with each other. The opening scene when the couple was about to rob the restaurant was very confusing at first but once the ending came around it was full circle and that was a great direction to go with it.

            The fact that this movie was full of different traditions or eras of movie is amazing. It is a gangster movie, crime movie, and there was even a little Japanese animation in it which topped it off. The script was very well written about the fragments of the story go hand in hand at the end. The cast was full of stars which caught a lot of people’s eyes back in the day. This film looks like it had a large budget because of the camera work and costumes they had, but it was only made with 8 million, which makes Pulp Fiction even more fantastic.

            This is Tarantino’s greatest film that he has made and it revived John Travolta’s career for him. Regarded as one of the greatest films of the 90’s it lives up to the height that it has achieved. Pulp Fiction was cut up into different fragments and it all tied into each other at the end, which I thought that was one of the greatest features of the movie. I would recommend Pulp Fiction to anyone who likes gangster movies or crime movies, it is truly a masterpiece to see.

            Gold Diggers of 1933 is usually not my type of movie that I would like. But this movie was surprisingly very good, it had many different elements that made it wonderful. The singing in the movie tied everything together along with the cheesy storyline. The characters and acting was actually very good for the time period.

            The music was a main part of this movie and they incorporated it very well into the movie. The movie was about a musical while they were in the great depression and the show girls finding love with a guy next door who happened to write music. The music was upbeat and was fast paced most of the time throughout the film which was perfect for it and its themes. The showgirls were amazing because of the acting, the scenes with Lawrence, Brad’s brother was great because of the way the showgirls fooled him.  The second show for Barney was ran solely on Brad’s funds because it was during the Great Depression causing many people to have no money. Brad was the composer for this show, and he did an excellent job on the music. The music went well with the show they put on because it was about love which was the theme of the show.

            During this time period people went to these types of shows to escape from the reality of the real world for a little because of how depressing it was. The music in the film was fantastic and the way the incorporated it into the film. Musicals aren’t always my favorite types of movies but this one was exceptionally given the fact that it was in 1933. The scenes were great and so was the acting in it. I would recommend this movie to anyone who like music.

            Although the Babadook is a short film, it is still a very good film in a short amount of time. Jennifer Kent, the director was an amazing one and I think this is the first movie I have seen with a female director. The Babadook had excellent techniques for keeping the audience on the edge of their seat almost every minute of it. It captured the technique of the unknown very well in many different scenes, along with that, the film had shadow obscuration which was incorporated into excellent. The music however tied everything together for the jump scares and Kent used them very well.

            The unknown was the scariest thing in the movie because we never knew when the Babadook was going to show up. The first unknown was when Amelia ripped up and threw away the Babadook book in the trash but moments later it showed up on her doorstep. Another great example of the unknown was when Amelia was driving her son back home and she suddenly started hearing the Babadook and started going crazy. We didn’t know what was going on with her and I personally was confused by this which also had a fear tied into it as well.

            Shadow obscuration was another fantastic element that was incorporated into the movie. When we actually did see the Babadook in her house, it was mainly shadows of him and we could not see him most of the time. At the end of the movie when Amelia was facing the Babadook after she got it out of her, it was only shadows of what it looked like to be wings. There were many other great examples of him but that one was the one that stood out for me the most when we finally got to see him in full power.

            The last element that the Babadook used very well was music. Kent used music in places exactly where you would expect it which tied everything in. She used music on cat scares when Amelia’s kid jumped out at her when we were all thinking that it was going to be the Babadook that scares her. She also used music when the last scene where she killed the Babadook and used intense music to tie in the scary scene already.

            This movie was one of the best horror movies I have seen in a long time. Although the length isn’t very long, it was psychologically one of the scarier movies with the elements of the unknown most of the movie. The shadow obscuration of the Babadook made it one of the scariest techniques throughout the film. Lastly, the music tied all of the scenes together and made it even scarier than it already was.

Moonrise Kingdom was an excellent film that incorporated the set design perfectly and all of the different scenes. Suzy and Sam’s relationship was also a very big part of the movie of course because they were the ones that ran away to escape from everyone. The Khaki scouts, Sam’s troop sets out to find them and it turned into an altercation that ended up in Suzy stabbing one of the scouts with scissors. They were then found but ran away again before a big storm hit the island and almost killing them.

            The main aspect that made this film so great was the locations that they were shot in. It was the perfect places to shoot them. Almost every shot in the film could be taken as a photograph on a postcard. The filming all took place in a span of a couple months in Rhode Island. The inside of the house in their playroom was aa amazing shot because everything was so symmetrical and very pleasing to look at. Suzy was usually sitting on the windowsill with her brothers on either side of the room. I thought it was a good tie around for the film because they started the movie in the room and ended it there also with Sam and Suzy being together.

            Another great production design element of the movie was the costumes. They were all hand stitched and the patches on the scout’s uniform looked excellent. They were also a main production design aspect as they took a lot of time on them. The child services lady walked in the church to take Sam away and she was dressed in all navy which signifies dominance and authority. She did have that, but she had it for the wrong reasons. Finally, Suzy most of the film wears pink which stands for love and of course she was in love with Sam the whole film.

            Overall, I think Moonrise Kingdom was a great movie that had a great plot with Sam and Suzy, but the movie also had the production design down to a key. It was excellent with the location they picked as it looked like a postcard every scene. The wardrobe was also very excellent as it represented many aspects of the characters and they really put thought into their costumes.

Children of Men is a fantastic movie that had many different camera movements that made the film come together as a whole. Cuarón wanted the film to have very little cuts and that is exactly what he did with it. Most of the scenes in this movie were shot in one take which made it difficult with all of the moving parts in some of the scenes. Children of Men won many different awards for the cinematography Cuarón used, which all of them were well deserved.

            There were many great cinematography angles within the movie but some of the ones that stood out the most to me was when Juliann and Theo were playing with the ping pong ball in the car and the camera was moving around within the car. Another good shot was in the opening scene where Theo was outside and was putting sugar in his coffee and the shop exploded. This is a diegetic camera shot where how they moved the camera around. That whole scene was also shot in one take which is very impressive to say the least.

            Some other fantastic shots were when everyone was in the car headed to the safe house when the car came out and everyone started attacking them. That was a wide angle shot because of how well we could see everyone within the shot. Also, when the bus went by their car and kept going on, that was also a wide angle shot, which was well placed. Most of the shots in this movie were actually shot with a handheld camera which is very impressive! It added to the effect of being with them in the scene because of the way the camera shook also.

            Children of Men was a fantastic movie from the storyline to the amazing camera shots. Cuarón was an amazing director and had many different fantastic shots. There were very little cuts within the movie and when there were cuts, they were very subtle. The most impressive shot was in the car and the camera was moving around the car which was very difficult to achieve.

            Whiplash was a great movie all around. It had great cutscenes within the movie and the storyline was fantastic. Whiplash had a great storyline because there were so many ups and downs with Andrew. Fletcher tore him down and brought him back up within the movie so many times and at the end Andrew impressed Fletcher once and for all. The cutscenes in Whiplash were one of the better ones I saw also. There were quite a few of jump cuts that were placed perfectly, like the camera moving from sheet note to sheet note to capture how Andrew nervous Andrew was feeling when he first saw the music. Another fantastic and great use of a jump cut was when Andrew arrived 3 hours early to his first day of practice, so he ended up sitting there. The main focus of cuts were smash cuts that were used plentiful. It cut on action when Fletcher was yelling or Andrew was playing the drums in his performance.

            At the very start of the movie there was a smash cut, the screen was black, and he was drumming, and it kept getting faster till it all of the sudden it stopped with Andrew on the screen, to put us on the edge of our seats. There were many cut away shots that were brilliantly used, like when Fletcher was teaching Andrew and he kept saying it was quite his tempo. Whiplash went on to win an Oscar in 2014 for how great its editing was. I found it to be a fantastic movie because of all of the emotions Andrew and Fletcher made you feel. Andrew had many ups and downs, he quit at one point making the audience feel down for him. Once he met back up with Fletcher after he quit, I was shocked because of how he treated him. Once he played on the final stage and killed his performance and Fletcher was impressed, I was amazed. I will admit when Andrew hugged his dad, I almost teared up a little because of how bad Fletcher treated him.

            I feel that many aspiring or current musicians who watch this movie would be motivated to try their best as it is very moving. Fletcher just wanted to have a great musician he could call his but he pushed people too hard causing them to quit and even kill themselves. Fletcher was passionate about his job and he wanted people to succeed instead of fail. He had a violent approach at sometimes which caused him to lash out in anger at his students.

            Overall, I think Whiplash was one of the better movies I have ever seen because of how good the editing was the way they used cuts and transitions throughout the movie. The storyline was fantastic I think because of the ups and downs he had, the introduction of his girlfriend then breaking it off because he has to focus on his drumming. Every aspect of the movie was great, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. fffffffffff

Super-size me was an excellent documentary on the health problems related to fast food and how much weight and other health problems it may cause in the future. Morgan Spurlock ate strictly McDonalds to see how much weight he would gain in the 30 days. His energy levels decreased significantly when he was on the 30-day binge of McDonald’s. Millions of people eat at fast food restaurants daily and the obesity rate is going up, so there shouldn’t be a coincidence on what is causing the obesity problem in America.

            During the filming of this documentary Morgan Spurlock experienced many health problems and some of those were very terrifying that his health consultants wanted him to quit his “diet” presa, but he wanted to finish his diet. This was crucial to Morgan’s findings because he wanted to see how his body would react. I think it is important to hear about Morgan’s experiences because our bodies aren’t fully capable of functioning at normal capacity with amount of chemicals and preservatives in these foods. The documentary goes beyond showing just the effects on humans to showing the brutal truth of what happens at big fast food chains.

            It also shows how schools aren’t helping much to the obesity epidemic because of the food they serve and how they don’t care about the quality. It is difficult for some schools to provide healthier foods for the kids because the costs are so much higher than the processed foods.

            I believe this movie holds a high place in the health industry because it influenced many individuals to transform their diet into a much healthier one rather than eating fast food. With a change of diet is also a change in lifestyle which means healthier choices and being happier overall. In the documentary Morgan says that his energy levels are low and whenever he eats the McDonald’s he felt a lot better. Changing your diet will keep your energy levels high allowing you to do so much more with their lives.

            This documentary was so impactful on many people and the food industry because of the truths it uncovered and gets people thinking about what they put in their own body. It raises awareness on what goes in these big food companies and how they only care about their money and not the effects it has on their customers. Morgan’s journey was one to remember because of all the health problems he ran into and the amount of weight he gained in such a short period of time. It puts into perspective about the amount of people that eat fast food and gain weight that quickly.
